Macro-, Micro-, and Nanomechanical Properties of Polymer Materials

During the last decade in the Department of Polymer Morphology, we have introduced, developed and perfected measurement of micromechanical properties of polymer materials. Our experience and knowledge have been recently published in an invited contribution to Wiley Encyclopedia. In this contribution, we will (i) explain the principle of micromechanical measurements, (ii) discuss the advantages and disadvantages of macro-, micro- and nanomechanical characterization of polymer materials, (iii) have a short look on our very recent results of macro-, micro- and nanocreep measurements on amorphous and semicrystalline polymers, and (iv) demonstrate that micro- and nanomechanical measurements can be applied not only on traditional, mostly stiff polymers materials (such as commodity polymers, their blends and composites), but also to much softer polymer systems (such as elastic polymer films, very soft rubbers, and hydrogels studied in our Institute).
